Priapism (Prolonged Erection) is a prolonged erection that occurs in the absence of sexual arousal or stimulation. It is usually painful and can last more than four hours. It occurs when blood remains in the penis and cannot drain.
Priapism requires immediate treatment. Without treatment, it can cause permanent damage.
Symptoms of priapism vary depending on the type. The two main types are ischemic and non-ischemic priapism.
An erection typically occurs in response to physical or psychological stimulation. This stimulation causes certain smooth muscles to relax, increasing blood flow to the spongy tissues of the penis. As a result, the penis, filled with blood, becomes erect. Once stimulation ends, blood flow returns and the penis returns to its non-rigid (flaccid) state.
Priapism occurs when any part of this system (blood, blood vessels, smooth muscles, or nerves) interrupts normal blood flow, and the erection persists. The underlying cause of priapism often cannot be determined, but several conditions may play a role.
