You need to enter just that portion with Insert > Formula.
It will depicted as a formula but attached inside text region.

This is writer region. You can change its line spacing, font, add item bullets, etc.
You can show its settings by right clicking to region and click to settings.
You can enter a subscript or upscript directly to your text while in it.
For example; this ab is a subscript example. ef is an upscript example.
 
You even can enter formula with edit math option in it.
c^d or a.b is an example to that.
However you will not be able to change font of formula in both text and writer regions.
It will always be courier new. But you can change font size of them.
