Matrix formatting is through the Davide's plugin.
It is not possible to do something directly ...or you need to start to convert numbers in string add the spacing and so on to improve just the formatting but you have no more numbers but string .. it doesn't look a practical idea .

For display (not for input) you can use the Table Region plugin. Otherwise just generate the input as separate columns and make the matrix using augment() afterwards. This has the advantage of better control on units per column.

Lightly shaded columns might be visually effective. Probably one of those "easy to say - 3 days coding to do" things.
