Hello all,

please forgive me if the question is maybe ridiculous.

I want to use the symbolic solver with the maxima plugin, but when I write the equation I get the error that the variable a is not defined.This is correct, because I want to solve for this variable.

Therefore the question which mistake I make here?

Hi,

you must force-define the symbolic analysis through a pop-up menu

As andrbig77 said, you have to set optimization to symbolic.
Maxima plugin is powerful, but requires manual installation.
For information, involving these type of symbolic calculations;
Maple plugin could do the same with much less effort.
Just click and install from plugins menu, that's all.

Regards
