What is the "State of the Art" for SMath in solving symbolically? Is there a plugin?

Sorry I'm sure this is discussed on here somewhere but I keep pulling old threads.

Thanks!

You may try the Maxima plugin. In the unofficial portable distribution (see link in the signature) there are some handbook pages on how to use the plugin. See also the forum topics Maxima examples and Maxima announcements.

Thanks Martin.

So does symbolic evaluation work with Maxima or I should ask if it is discussed in the handbook / forum and I will look there? How about when units are involved? Do you know of any other plugin that would handle this?

Thanks again for your time.

Yes,I recommended the Maxima plugin in response to your question for a plugin for symbolic computations. Sorry for not saying that this implies that it can handle symbolic evaluation. And yes, it can handle units. And yes, there are other plugins for symbolic evaluation. You might search for the maple plugin. In the SVN repository, there is also an XCAS plugin.

BTW, there is now a chapter on SMath with Maxima in the german pdf handbook. It covers installation, equation solving and integration.
