I am a newbie to smath and wanted to do a simple symbolic differetiation.. i tried using Ctrl+. after i have entered the expression but it nothing happens. d(x^3)/dx Ctrl+. I presume I need to hold all the 3 keys at the same time?what am i doing wrong?

you have to hold down CTRL and press . (in shortcuts in general + is a chaining symbol for who reads, not something to press)
