Varying results for trig function - Messages
#1 Posted: 2/27/2012 12:09:48 PM
I found a minor problem with trigonometric functions. The following problem occurs only for a value of 30 degrees, as you can see the value of sin evaluates differently depending on the construction of the math. And only when I am modifying the value of phi in expression shown.
It would not be a problem if a value of phi = 30 was not common in geotechnical engineering.
[MATH]φ:30deg[/MATH]
[MATH=eng]γ:1.3[/MATH]
[MATH=eng]δ:atan(tan(φ)/γ)[/MATH]
[MATH=eng]δ=23.9468@'deg[/MATH]
[MATH=eng]β:sin(δ)[/MATH]
[MATH=eng]β=1.2177[/MATH]
[MATH=eng]sin(δ)=0.4059[/MATH]
Any thoughts?

Hello,
The solution is to apply Optimization|Numeric or None on the region:
[MATH=eng]δ←atan(tan(φ)/γ)[/MATH]
This is a common advice to do first when you need just the numerical values.
BTW, the degrees does not work properly in v0.92
Regards,
Radovan

It doesn't wort in one case only - when you try to evaluate it numerically in a single line like:
P.S.: Will try to release new SMath Studio version as soon as possible.
Regards.

Hello,
Also in v.093 remains the problem reported by Scottg. The solution indicated by Radovan, it works properly.
Regards,
Sergio
