Radovan,
I just realized that the file is empty.
This should have not been the case, I saved a working evaluation of a formula.

Hello,
Quite strange
An empty file (at least it looks that way) with the message "Root Element is missing" when tried to be open. Have no the slightest idea. Maybe to to try reproduce what you have done?
I also tried to make an empty text file and save it with the *.sm extension. The same message appeared.

Radovan

Radovan,
I think I found something.
Do qa simple calculation like:
Q:=10 V:=30
E:=Q*V
E=
Then save the file as "Test"
Then save the file again as "1.10"
(Chapter 1 problem 10)
The second file is empty with the error message when you try to open it.
Thank you,
Basile

Hello Basile,
It seems that period-point like in 1.10 is sometimes not allowed in the SMath file name.
I think the more problematic thing here is that SMath will not tell you that the file has not being saved (at least that happened to me). For instance if you open SMath the worksheet will have the name "Page1" . If you try to save your file with the name say "10.1" it will be saved without *.sm extension and will be empty. The worksheet name - file name will still remain "Page1". But if you save it as "10.1.sm", actually just add the extension - it will be saved and will not be empty.
I hope you can reproduce this.

Radovan

Radovan,
Yes you are right.
I guess, for now, the rule is: "when the file name includes a period, we have to add the extension".
I hope it will be fixed soon.
Thank you,
Basile

Unfortunately this file is unrecoverable. The problem has been addressed recently and should never happen anymore with the most recent versions of the program (fix introduced in SS 0.98.6398 beta).

Hello,
I have a problem opening my Smath file. It says "Root element is missing". Earlier today I made a pdf of my file and saved it and thought everything was ok. I even checked the PDF version of my file and everything seemed to be ok. But later in the evening when I wanted to check my work again, the PDF file was completely gone from my computer and when I tried to open my Smath file it gave me the error "Root element is missing". After clicking OK it opens a completely empty file. It was a pretty big file, 10 pages long in PDF version.
Is there any way I can recover my work?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: i forgot to put the link where the file is:

Absolutely NOT
Click on your file name ... 0kB ... gone when Smath crashed.
It may simply have crashed at the closing of the file, while
everything seemed to be working fine in session.
Now, you will never work so long pages and not alternate a copy.
Wise also to save the *.PDF under new name.

As said by Jean unfortunately there's nothing to recover here. What version of SMath Studio are you using? In the most recent versions (f.e. latest stable) you should notice an error message while saving and the original file is kept as it was at the previous successful save (at least this how it should works).
Wrotethe PDF file was completely gone from my computer
That's really strange (pdf isn't under the control of SMath Studio), probably is still in the default pdf output path or there might be something in a temporary path.

Assume you would need to publish your Smath document as *.PDF.
Use the $50 PDF from "Nuance", you can save it under new name
as an independent entity, with plenty of features.
... However ... it happens from unexplained, that while in
Smath session, everything works fine but a silent bug exist
and does not save and maybe will not save *.PDF as well.
All CAS have bugs [Mathematica, Maple, Mathcad ...]
