When I find a post with an attached file that I think may answer my question, I cannot open the file, independent of the file type. Any help appreciated.

Seems a problem on your side (browser/system). It might be an IT security policy? Firewall?

Turns out some files are hot links, which I can download. Some are not; they are not underlined and cannot be downloaded. Does that mean they are old and no longer available?

Greetings,

The website migrated from http to https a while back; if a hyperlink doesn't work, it may be that it isn't referencing the current https protocol. I remember this being an issue for the snippets referenced on the WIKI for colors on 2d-plots.

May this be of Good Help;

Before downloading Smath documents, disable your firewall(s).
Try the two documents I just posted.
Otherwise, doctored documents or else documents would have to be images for coding.
Since my first days Internet/e-mail I never had firewall.
Windows and Bell are very safe.

Firewall has nothing to do with it.

Greetings,

I think the difference lies in that search results don't seem to support hyperlinks directly; you would need to navigate to those posts within a forum thread itself for a hyperlink to be active.

Your snippet shows downloaded 29/30 times
Some have been downloaded over 100 times
No complain so far about not downloading Smath documents.

I am not 100% sure but this can be a Javascript issue.
It looks like scripts of forum are blocked by your browser.
It may be occur by one of your browser, adblock, firewall, etc settings.
Or an extension that blocks javascripts.

This seems most likely the issue, from the screenshot alone. That's how the YAF.NET forum works; also IMHO is better this way, since if you navigate the thread you might find user opinions, if there are updated versions, issues, etc...
