Right click to text region, there is a "Show all characters" option.
Unchech it if it is enabled, that should do the trick.

Never experimented this inconvenience.
As soon as you insert Writer Region type something text,
Once in there ... compose the suite.
Then get the menu bar from options ... Bingo !
