Starting at least with RC1 of 0.98 (didn't check earlier versions so far) there is a problem with the Maxima plugin breaking the built-in diff function.

I filed a bug report BTS 2311

Seems that the api changes require rework of the plugin. Unfortunately, this won't happpen soon, as it requires me to learn C# and to dig into the code. Feel free to add examples to the bug report. One day this might help with fixing the bug.
A workaround is to take over the diff function by maxima using MaximaTakeover("all" ), but I also had to add a line operator to the function definition in the example in the bug report.
