A few years back there was something developed so an active SMATH area could be embedded in Open Office Word document. I searched the site here thoroughly and could find no information.
Any help would be appreciated.

AFAIK, there was no such feature.

You can export the data as ODF/ODS/ODT (see Data Exchange plugin) but I don't think there is a plugin to use inside OpenOffice/LibreOffice.
