How do you put in a header that automatically puts in the page number of the calculation you are on, in a multi page document?

Insert> Header and Footer (to enable them)
Insert> Field> Current page index (this can go to any math or text region in the header/footer)

That works, for simple page numbering, but I wanted to say Page X of X and have the X's be automatic.

Simply add another field:

insert > field > Number of pages

I figured out how to do that, but why is it so tedious. To do that, you have to put in the first number, then exit the command, come back in put in the word "of" then exit, and come back in and put in the number of pages, otherwise, it just changes the one box you are in, and it does not work. Seems like you should be able to put it in in one step.

Fields are a recent feature, they might be improved in future (a shortcut for the dialog, some sort of dynamic assistant, composed fields, an insert that doesn't close the dialog, ...). I agree it might be simplified, however isn't something you use massively in a document (you have to set it once per document or even less, if you prepare your own template to copy and use as starting point for every project).

Also, you can copy/paste this if you want:

page \[PAGENUM[0]]\ of \[COUNT[0]]\

David,
I'm doing custom footers and inserted the Current Page Index (pagenum) field on the right hand side. How do I get it to start on page 3? I cannot find a way to edit this fields.
BTW; I have a LibreOffice cover sheet I want to use

Greetings,

There is a simple solution, type the following:
page \[PAGENUM[2]]\ of \[COUNT[2]]\」
Your first sheet will start on page '3' and your total page number will be increased by +2
