Hello I'm a new user, i came from using mathcad 15.

I'm an engineering student, smath would come really handy in my daily problems.

I'm trying to find a good workflow using smath.

I like it when my project is very clean and I am able to come back 5 years later and still be able to understand the document without problems.

So basically I would like to know if I can do following things using smath alone or smath in combination with latex.

Smath alone :

- Changing the fonts, allow me to choose a writing style that i find good

- Organizing the smath document with titels sections and subsections that automatically update.

- Make a table of content

Smath with Latex :

- Handling all the math in smath
- Exporting it to latex in a useful way ( i don't want to have to import a full pdf page)

So basically using smath to do all the calculation, then import regions into latex, maybe turn the smath math expression into latex language so i can change the font to fit my needs an also use latex to do annotations and comments.

any idea if i can achieve my goals using smath?

For texts, you can try Writer Region plugin. Currently this feature is not available for math.

That's something I'm working on. The plugin mentioned above is a spin-off from this project, when I'll be able to reach a couple of critical milestones in WriterRegion, both sections and table of contents will be made available.

If you mean importing latex math, this feature is not available.

It is possible to export (save as) a worksheet to XeLaTeX *.tex file using Data Exchange plugin
If you like my plugins please consider to support the program buying a license; for personal contributions to me: paypal.me/dcprojects

thank you for the fast answer!

I tried the xelatex data exchange,it is good but lacks a few things to make it useful to a work routine.

First every time you export to xelatex it writes a new file.
Let's say I want to change the formating in the xelatec file, everytime i want to continue adding stuff or change the smath file it will overwrite my changes .
So the only way it can work right now is if I copy the lines of codes from the xelatex export to a latex file. But this is alot of work especially for engineers because i often need to iterate.

Also it seems that the smath exporter writes from left to write and up to down. So my final file looks different from the smath version

So yeah the export to latex works, it is usefull and would get great result ,but the workflow isn't efficient enough.

Ill try the font editor now :d

Smath is very good at documenting calculations, however I is unlikely that it will have text editing fidelity and presentation of MATHCAD 15 in near future.

For now I am making my own TOC in a word document, use Davides Writer Region for text formatting and Image Region for graphics.

And yet prints from SMath do not look as "professional" as from mathcad. After all it is not a word processor, it is a mathematical package.

Ironically few of my coworkers are switching from MATHCAD to Smath for the purpose of calculation documentation, since there are few things that SMATH does better in that department.

Well my goal is to use one software to make an understandable document.
TOC, font and sections surely can help me achieving this goal!

If i can make automated sections and chapters and a table of content it would make me really happy, then I won't need to use another program than smath, and everything will update automatically, I dont like exporting and copying stuff around .

The only reason i didnt use Smath before is that i didn't know it existed until a few days ago. I love open source communities .

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So i have a few more questions now !:

- is there a shortcut to do a new math/text region on the same line while beeing in a text region already. For comparison when i want to do a a new region under the region im currently editing I just need to press enter.
Is there a shortcut to do the same but make the new region on the right instead of underneath?

-I tried the writer region from David, I have troubles installing the dictionaries , I tried downloading the en dictionary in .xpi from the Mozilla Website https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/language-tools/, unzipped it and it wasnt recognized as a dictionnary, i also tried 2 libre office dictionnary, same thing happens .

- How can i download the plugin for section region from David even if its only beta, i really dont need many featueres!

thanks for your time!

You're welcome

A solution might be to write a plugin that reads tex files; this is possible altough probably would be a huge challenge, since you have to provide a good pattern reader even for anything that is not math (I mean, one might write the routines to reverse what is produced by DataExchange, f.e, but reading the file you have to deal even with anything that might be written outside SMath, correct or even not)

That's even how it works the math flow in the program (I might have missed the point here)

Not in my knowledge (but would be interesting; I'll check it)

Have you selected the sub-folder "dictionaries"? The import utility can't dig the folders, you have to select the one that contains the *.aff and *.dic files. In future I'll try to improve the import dialog to load directly the packages.

You can download it from the SVN and compile it; however I discourage any use of this plugin for productivity, since it is incomplete and the compatibility will be broken for sure (it is here just for testing and developing purposes).
