If you disable Units, you have a solution.
root is undocumented in Smath. However, we have applications.
Mathcad root is known to be inaccurate.

Use Findroot() for solving with units.
And your λ.2 part was different from original document.

Yes you can.
With inserting units, roots() can solve as solve() function.
roots() and Findroot() are both capable of solving system of equations.
Findroot() can solve without inserting units.
