Obviously not, but the bug isn't that obvious: just avoid to use that 'phi' (j Ctrl-G):

Linux mono doesn't have this problem.

Yes, these are different letters:
cos(ϕ) and cos(φ)maple() works with φ
This was done to unambiguously convert variables into Greek letters:
maple() function uses implicit encoding of Greek letters:

Just in case that Maxima is an option. Unfortunately, Maxima requires the user to try specialized simplification functions and doesn't provide a powerful generic simplify.
